The Cause Of Heartburn ?

If you suffer from Heartburn, you require some relief. Look over this information for help in understanding the cause of heartburn.

Heartburn, or GERD occurs when the tight ring like muscle at the bottom of the esophagus relaxes. This little ring of muscle at the lower base of the esophagus is called the esophageal sphincter (LES) . This is a one way valve. But when the valve relaxes nourishment and liquid the valve are allowed to go back up. This allows the acid from nourishment and liquid from the stomach to be splashed or pushed upward up into the lower esophagus creating heartburn.

The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth and the stomach.
The stomach digestive juices are quite acid laden, and is very harsh when it gets in the wrong place. It literally scorches the esophagus, as harsh acid would, if it dropped onto the skin. This makes for a very painful burning feeling, hence the name. If it is chronic or ongoing it becomes Heartburn.

Here is how it is supposed to work: Food and liquid goes into the stomach, the valve closes and keeps the food and stomach acid from splashing or refluxing upward, up the tube.

The cause of heartburn, or GERD is the constant relaxing of the esophageal sphincter valve, which keeps the stomach acids in the stomach, and because of this relaxation acids are propelled up into the esophagus.

Heartburn can cause such a burning sensation within the chest and can be so burning that some may wonder that they are having a heart attack. Heartburn has nothing to do with the heart, even though it is called "Heartburn", it is about the dreadful pain of the acid reflux .

This stomach acid can reach far as up into the throat area as stomach gas is belched or expelled upward. Acid burns, like any burn, take time to heal. The heartburn acid causes your esophagus to become irritated and inflamed. It can lead to ulceration within the esophagus tube and even in the bronchial tubes.

I hope this article gave you a better understanding of the cause of heartburn. It is wise to address it at the first signs, so it does not get worse.
