Seasonal Affective Disorder - Light Is Necessary

During the wintertime, people often don't get enough sunshine. As many as a half a million people in the U.S. may have Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Those with winter onset type have symptoms that begin in the fall or winter and are affected by the lack of sunshine. Those with summer onset begin sysmptoms in the spring or summer and it ends as the daylight of the seasons change.

Many people that work in office buildings are away from the window and never see the light of day. During the winter, they probably wake up in the dark and after work go home in the dark.

If you are a stay at home parent or an elderly person, there may also be days when you don't go outside. If you end up with SAD, it is important to find a source of light to help take care of the depression.

What To Do About SAD

This being out of the sunlight for extended periods of time, or the change of light availablity,  can have an enormous effect on a person's mood.  For any of us, but especially if you have Seasonal Affective Disorder, make it a point to get sunlight  and to spend some time outside.  Even if it is for only 15 minutes each day.  Your body needs sunlight and fresh air. If you cannot do that, then I have another suggestion.

For many, having a source of full spectrum light on a daily basis  helps quite a bit.
There are several choices in what can be used. One client I have works with a Light Visor. Other people use a box light. Which of these would fit in with your schedule and environment?
